The Method

Spelling as communication

Spelling on letter boards is a transformative method of communication for nonspeaking, minimally speaking, and unreliably speaking individuals. It's built on one radical idea: presume competence.

Many individuals live with whole-body apraxia — a motor planning disorder that makes intentional movement unreliable. This isn't a cognitive deficit. It's a body that doesn't cooperate with a mind that understands everything.

Through structured lessons, spellers practice pointing to letters on boards, progressing toward typing on a keyboard — building the neural pathways that unlock autonomous communication.

About Ryan Curella

A father first.

I didn't come to this work through a textbook or a training program. I came to it as a dad. With a non speaker in our family, we were desperate for a way to understand the person we knew was more than his behaviors. Presuming competence and beginning our spelling journey replaced our desperation with confidence in a path toward a better future.

That experience is why I pursued certification as a Spellers Method Provider. I know the strain having a non speaker can place on a family. We were exhausted, overwhelmed, and struggling as a family. All of that changed for everyone when we found the Spellers Method® and began presuming competence in Jack.
